Ecuador has long been popular with surfers looking for a warm water fix after enduring the cold Humboldt Current that pervades along the South American pacific coast. Travelers concentrated on the Montañita area in the south but rumours of a perfect left set-up in Mompiche have attracted the more adventurous to the “green province” of Esmeraldas. The northernmost coastal province enjoys lush vegetation, from tropical rainforest to mangroves while estuaries cut the land into remote territories only accessible by boat. Esmeraldas itself is best avoided as its reputation stands as one of the most dangerous cities around, with only a murky, mushy beachbreak for desperadoes.
When to Go
Ecuador is one of those rare countries to be exposed to both N and S swells. Although N swells will decay over the 8-10 days it takes to reach the Equator and arrive during the wet season, they determine the prime surf season because of regular glassy conditions or light onshore sea breezes. Between December and April, there are many days in the 2-6ft (0.6-2m) range with occasional 8-10ft (2.5m-3m) “oleajes” that activate many good breaks. SW swells in the austral winter are more consistent but the Esmeraldas region is not well exposed to receive them. In addition their core season (April-August) matches with the trade winds that mess up the surf and bring colder temps. S-SW winds dominate up to 90% of the time but much less during the rainy season when the winds are lighter and blow from the N-NE on a regular basis. Overall wind trends are good for the N swells. Despite noticeable exceptions, waves are not that tide-sensitive and tide tables are non-existent.
