The hut system is scalable and starts with the entry module, a covered entry transition space with flexible utility room. More modules are added to create space for living, eating and sleeping. You can choose the size of your modular home. The base model, the studio loft, measures 191 square feet (18 m2 ) with a covered entry front. They provide a pre-fabricated kit of parts which are modular, easy to assemble, customisable and sustainable.
The BHC’s Vancouver studio designed this prefabricated ‘kit-of-parts’ system. The exterior structure is made from pre-assembled parts. The interior can be designed by the customer or you can choose from the BHC’s design options: frontcountry or backcountry.
Frontcountry is adaptable for urban living and full-time residential occupation or a live/work space. It can be adapted as an addition to an existing house or be a self-contained residence. Several huts can create an urban enclave of multifunctional structures.
Backcountry is created as an affordable outdoor recreation structure for individuals and organizations. The hut fits a community kitchen at the bottom and bunk-bed sleeping area at the top floor.
The company will clarify the entire process and outline the total project budget. They assist with permits, documentation requirements and customization.
Site preparation is minimal. Piling holes can be hand-dug and concrete is poured into sonotubes for the foundation. They use environmentally sensitive products for all materials. They adopt a zero-waste philosophy in the design. The prefabrication allows for an economy and conservation of material and energy usage.
The “flat pack” kit of parts is delivered to your location via air or off-road vehicles. A team of 4 people can raise the structure in less than a week without needing heavy machinery.
